Avast Software siempre se ha enorgullecido de la forma exponencial en la que se propaga su programa avast! antivirus, con un 80 por ciento de nuevos usuarios que utilizan sus soluciones. Pero la rápida expansión mundial de una licencia multi-usuario de avast! Pro Antivirus sorprendió incluso a la alta dirección de la empresa.

Lo que comenzó como una licencia de 14 usuarios para una pequeña empresa en Tucson, Arizona (EE.UU), de fecha 30 de junio 2009, proliferaron rápidamente a 774.651 usuarios activos a finales de 2010. La licencia se ha utilizado en más de 200 países, desde Afganistán a Zimbabue – incluso en la Ciudad del Vaticano. El crecimiento, fenomenal sí, pero a excepción de los 14 usuarios originales, todos los demás son piratas.

“Tomamos la decisión de no bloquear esta licencia para ver cómo esta licencia de avast! Pro Antivirus podría crecer. La respuesta es ‘mucho‘", dijo Vince Steckler, CEO de Avast Software. “Ahora estamos en el proceso de convertir a estos piratas a los productos legales".

La velocidad a la que se propagó la licencia pirata de Arizona fue acelerada por los sitios warez, una fuente común para la descarga de películas y programas. “Hemos encontrado nuestro código de licencia en numerosos sitios warez en todo el mundo", dijo Steckler. “Existe una paradoja en los usuarios de ordenadores que buscan programas antivirus ‘gratuitos‘ en lugares con una reputación conocida por la propagación de malware". Comentando que la descarga en estos sitios no está libre de riesgos, tal y como el avast! Virus Lab ha documentado ejemplos de sitios warez que distribuyen paquetes de programa antivirus ‘rotos -cracked-’ combinados con malware.

Los usuarios de la licencia pirata, han sido rastreados por su dirección IP geográfica a más de 200 países. “La lista contiene casi todos los países de los que han oído hablar, y algunos de los que no", bromeó el Steckler. Rusia, el país con el mayor número de usuarios de licencias piratas, todavía tiene menos de 9% del total. Sin licencias piratas identificadas en el Polo Norte, el lugar más inesperado son los dos equipos que se encuentran en el Vaticano.

Mediante el uso de la licencia pirata de avast! Pro Antivirus, más de un cuarto de millón de equipos informáticos han tenido acceso al motor antivirus avast! con dos características adicionales. “avast! Pro Antivirus tiene avast! Sandbox (Virtualización de Procesos) y un escudo de secuencias de comandos, Script Shield, para detectar virus de script de transmisión en Internet", dijo Steckler. “Sin embargo, el motor antivirus de avast! Pro es el mismo utilizado en toda la línea de productos avast!, incluido nuestra versión gratuita avast! Free Antivirus".

A los usuarios identificados se les envió un pop-up en el que se les comunicaba que había una licencia pirata de avast! y que se cortarían las actualizaciones de base de datos de virus. También se les ha dado la opción de usar avast! Free Antivirus o la compra de avast! Pro Antivirus.

Fortinet ofrece a los usuarios unos sencillos y prácticos consejos de seguridad para que estos puedan evitar la infección de sus PC o el robo de sus datos bancarios.

Correos electrónicos no solicitados
Los spammers y scammers son conscientes del gran atractivo que en estas fechas suponen mensajes del tipo “Grandes descuentos en iPads…hasta el 50%" y que suponen un gran peligro para el usuario. Al hacer click en el link, el usuario es redirigido a una web que descarga malware en su PC.

Consejo: Ante la mínima duda sobre la licitud del link no acceda a él, basta con situar el cursor sobre el mismo (sin hacer click sobre él) y chequear la URL a la que dirige. Si no reconoce la URL, es mejor no acceder.

Ataques SEO Los cibercriminales trastocan el algoritmo de los motores de búsqueda para situar sus webs maliciosas en los primeras posiciones de los resultados de búsqueda. Utilizan términos de búsqueda como “Rebajas" “Ofertas de Navidad," o “Especiales de fin de año". Cuando un usuario hace click sobre un link malicioso, puede ser dirigido a una web que compromete automáticamente su ordenador.

Consejo: No haga click sobre el link, sitúe el cursor sobre él para comprobar a dónde le redirecciona. Observe el resto de resultados que aparecen junto al link antes de hacer click. Normalmente los sites infectados contienen información que no coincide con lo que el usuario estaba buscando.

Retailers online desconocidos Si descubre una tienda online que ofrece unas ofertas increíbles, investigue si se trata de un distribuidor legal y no una web fraudulenta que desaparecerá en pocos días llevándose los datos de su tarjeta de crédito.

Consejo: Asegúrese de que su antivirus está actualizado, así como el sistema de prevención de intrusiones para protegerse frente a los exploits que se albergan en los sites comprometidos. Los exploits infectarán el sistema con un ataque “drive-by" a través de las brechas de seguridad del software. Si sufre este tipo de ataque sin contar con el sistema de protección adecuado, ni siquiera sabrá si ha sido infectado.

Amigos que envían links no solicitados Los links maliciosos no siempre vienen en los emails de spam. Pueden proceder de un amigo cuyo ordenador ha sido infectado sin él saberlo. La máquina infectada puede pertenecer a una botnet programada para rastrear en el libro de direcciones de su correo electrónico y enviar links maliciosos a todos sus contactos. Los mensajes suelen ser de este tipo: “Oye, mira qué oferta hay aquí!" o “En esta tienda hacen ofertas por Navidad de hasta un 50%!" Al hacer click sobre el link le lleva al site malicioso que instalará malware en su sistema o robará sus credenciales bancarias.

Consejo: Utilice el sentido común. ¿Su amigo le envía normalmente este tipo de informaciones sobre ofertas o gangas?. Si no, consulte a su amistad si envió ese correo, de no ser favorable la respuesta alerte a su amigo para que escanee su sistema.

La fuga de datos es una de las mayores preocupaciones de las pequeñas empresas, según un estudio global de Trend Micro.

Virus, troyanos, malware para el robo de información y fuga de datos, son las principales preocupaciones en materia de TI que tienen las pequeñas empresas, según revela el estudio Trend Micro 2010 realizado entre usuarios finales corporativos, que incluye a 1600 usuarios finales de la compañía de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Alemania y Japón.

El promedio de pequeñas compañías afectadas por ataques de virus fue del 63%; mientras que el 60% lo fueron por troyanos; el 59% por malware parar robar información (malware diseñado por cibercriminales específicamente para este fin); seguido del 56% de las empresas que padecieron fugas de datos (intencionadas o no, con el fin de mandar información sensible o crucial fuera de la red corporativa). Por su parte, los fraudes por phishing y el spam fueron algo menos preocupantes entre las pequeñas empresas encuestadas.

“Lo que esto nos pone de manifiesto es que la pérdida de datos, ya sea mediante fugas de información interna o provocada por la acción del malware, es un serio problema para las compañías de pequeño tamaño, especialmente a medida que son más conscientes de su atractivo para los cibercriminales", afirma David Perry, Director Global de Educación de Trend Micro. “Así, no sería ninguna sorpresa ver cómo el malware para robar información y la fuga de datos se hacen con el primer y segundo lugar de esta lista en los próximos años".

A pesar de estas preocupaciones, el estudio también pone de manifiesto que en todos los países, las pequeñas organizaciones tienen un 23% menos de probabilidades de contar con políticas establecidas de prevención de fuga de datos que las grandes compañías.

La mayor diferencia se encontró en Japón, donde el 81% de las grandes corporaciones tienen políticas para prevenir la fuga de datos en comparación con el 47% de las pequeñas empresas. Para aquellos negocios que disponen de estas estrategias, los empleados de las grandes compañías son los que tienen mayores posibilidades de recibir formación en materia de prevención de fuga de datos que aquellos que pertenecen a empresas de menor tamaño.

Esto se agrava por el hecho de que los trabajadores dentro de las empresas más grandes apuntan tener más conocimiento de la información confidencial de la compañía que aquellos que trabajan en las más pequeñas. Los empleados en las corporaciones más grandes de Estados Unidos se muestran más predispuestos a señalar las fugas de datos como una amenaza más seria que los de las pequeñas empresas: el 74% de las grandes frente al 49% en las pequeñas.

En el Reino Unido, esto también es significativo: el 73% de los trabajadores de las grandes corporaciones dice conocer sobre información confidencial comparado con el 63% en los pequeños negocios. También vale la pena destacar que en cada país, los empleados de las grandes cuentas es más probable que hayan filtrado información desde dentro de su compañía.

Ares se caracteriza por su diseño modular, similar al troyano ZeuS, del que se distribuyeron millones de copias. Los cibercriminales podrán propagar el malware y modificarlo y adaptarlo a diversos escenarios de ataque. Sus amplias posibilidades y su carácter versátil hacen de Ares un malware potencialmente muy peligroso.

“Ares ofrece a los recién llegados al mundo del cibercrimen amplias posibilidades de distribución a través de cualquier página web y, como tiene muchas variantes, puede ser utilizado para prácticamente cualquier tipo de ataque, por lo que actuará no sólo en forma de troyano bancario", afirma Ralf Benzmüler, responsable de G Data SecurityLabs. “Mientras tanto, Ares se multiplicará vía web por lo que los internautas necesitan protegerse con soluciones que puedan funcionar como filtros capaces de bloquear las URLs peligrosas antes de que carguen en el navegador".

El desarrollador de Ares ha comentado en un foro underground: “Ares no está focalizado en ataques contra la banca. Cada copia de Ares puede ser única y puede configurarse en función del comprador, aunque tiene las mismas capacidades como troyano bancario que ZeuS y SpyEye".

Además del propio troyano Ares, también hay disponible un kit de desarrollo que puede conseguirse de forma gratuita, aunque aparentemente sólo para “desarrolladores de confianza". Todo esto bajo la condición de abonar un determinado canon al creador de Ares por cualquiera de sus módulos vendidos a terceros. Para cualquier otra persona, los precios pueden llegar hasta los 6.000 dólares americanos. De igual forma, se puede comprar un “paquete de inicio" con funciones reducidas por 850 americanos. Como es costumbre en los mercados negros de Internet, los pagos se hacen a través de servicios de pago online completamente anónimos (en este caso WebMoney), por lo que ni el comprador ni el vendedor necesitan revelan su verdadera identidad.

Los expertos de seguridad de G Data anticipan que, después de su lanzamiento en los pertinentes foros underground, Ares empezará a circular en un gran número de variantes. Sobre su alcance, difusión, objetivos (si los hay) y mecanismos de ataque sólo se puede especular, pero el troyano es potencialmente muy peligroso.

Google Chrome preside la lista del software mas vulnerable
La empresa de seguridad informática Bit9 ha publicado un informe con las vulnerabilidades detectadas en doce productos de software durante los tres trimestres transcurridos de 2010. Google Chrome ocupa el primer lugar, con 76 incidencias graves.

Los cinco navegadores más populares han sido analizados en detalle por Bit9, junto con Webkit, utilizado en Safari y Chrome. Los demás programas, aparte de Microsoft Office, son aplicaciones usadas frecuentemente como extensiones de navegadores.

El informe de Bit9, disponible en ésta página, constituye básicamente una advertencia a las empresas sobre el riesgo de que los empleados descarguen software no autorizado, a la vez que pone de relieve la importancia de estar atentos a las actualizaciones de programas.

Para la elaboración de su informe, Bit9 ha considerado únicamente el número de vulnerabilidades graves reportadas. La lista, según número de incidencias, es la siguiente. En paréntesis el número de vulnerabilidades graves:

La información tiene ciertas carencias. Por ejemplo, no indica el tiempo transcurrido desde la detección de cada vulnerabilidad específica, hasta la fecha en que fue solucionada. Tampoco señala si la vulnerabilidad ha sido de hecho explotada, o si sólo se trató de un peligro potencial.

En principio entonces, y con las salvedades indicadas en el párrafo anterior, la lista presenta un negativo panorama para Google Chrome. Sin embargo, para el caso del navegador, la mayoría de las vulnerabilidades han sido reportadas después de la publicación de actualizaciones de Chrome. De igual modo, Google tiene un programa de recompensas para la detección de agujeros de seguridad de sus programas. Esto en sí puede haber motivado a muchos expertos a concentrarse en analizar Chrome en busca de vulnerabilidades, el lugar de otro software.

Por lo demás, la lista de Bit9 presupone que los fabricantes hayan comunicado a la opinión pública todas las vulnerabilidades detectadas y eliminadas de sus respectivos productos. Desde ya, se sabe que no todos los fabricantes sienten el mismo interés por comunicar tales errores. Microsoft figura en tal grupo, mientras que, en comparación, en la práctica es imposible mantener en secreto las actualizaciones de seguridad del software de código abierto.

En una nota de prensa, Bit9 comenta que las aplicaciones más populares a menudo contienen vulnerabilidades que pueden ser explotadas por cibercriminales. Destaca además la importancia de que los departamentos de TI de las empresas estén atentos y sean proactivos a la hora de actualizar su software.

El material usado en la investigación de Bit9 fue recogido de la base de datos de vulnerabilidades de National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), de Estados Unidos. Entre los criterios utilizados para incluir vulnerabilidades en la lista, es que estas hayan tenido un grado de gravedad de entre 7 y 10 puntos.

Se trata de un troyano espía que busca documentos y archivos que pueden contener información privada y la envía al atacante.

BitDefender advierte a las empresas y usuarios particulares sobre el peligro de Trojan.Spy.YE, una nueva amenaza cibernética diseñada para robar datos sensibles de las redes corporativas.

Este troyano cuenta con características de backdoor y spyware, es decir, es capaz de abrir un puerto en el equipo para que un atacante remoto pueda conectarse a él y también de controlar las tareas que el usuario realiza en su equipo para capturar datos “interesantes" para su creador.

El componente de backdoor ayuda al troyano a registrarse como un servicio para poder recibir las órdenes de su creador, mientras que el componente de software espía envía datos acerca de los archivos que hay en el equipo, el sistema operativo, los procesos que se están ejecutando en el ordenador, etc., mientras que también hace capturas de pantalla de los procesos en curso.

El hecho de que este troyano busque todo lo que esté relacionado con archivos, correos electrónicos (. Eml,. Dbx), libretas de direcciones (. Wab) bases de datos y documentos (. Doc., Odt., Pdf, etc.), etc. hace sospechar que Trojan.Spy.Yek está diseñado para el espionaje industrial y que su objetivo son los datos privados de las empresas.

“Una vez tengan en su poder esos datos, los ciberdelincuentes pueden utilizarlos para venderlos a la competencia, lanzar ataques contra la empresa, e, incluso, chantajearla", explica Jocelyn Otero, directora de Marketing de BitDefender para España, Portugal y Latinoamerica.

G Data recomienda prestar atención al remitente del mensaje. Los cibercriminales usan con frecuencia errores aleatorios de escritura o, como en este caso, sustituyen caracteres por otros muy similares con el objetivo de conseguir una apariencia legítima y lo más parecida posible a la original.

G Data advierte de un nuevo ataque de phising a través de Facebook en el que los usuarios de la red social reciben un mensaje procedente del servicio oficial de la red social ‘Facebook Security’. Sin embargo, este es un nuevo intento de estafa donde se pide al usuario que introduzca nombre, dirección de correo, contraseña y fecha de nacimiento para evitar la desactivación de su cuenta de usuario. La razón esgrimida en el mensaje es que otros usuarios han notificado comportamientos indebidos desde esta cuenta de Facebook.

A simple vista, la estafa no es nada original. Sin embargo, el empeño puesto por los estafadores en pasar desapercibido es sorprendente. Sólo una mirada meticulosa nos permitirá comprobar que el remitente se identifica como «Faceboo? Securily», en donde la ‘k’ y la ‘t’ no están escritas con el estilo de letra habitual. Este nuevo estilo permite a los usurpadores ganarse la confianza del usuario al hacerse pasar como organismo autorizado, siendo extremadamente difícil para el usuario identificar las nuevas letras como falsas.

Este método es habitual entre los cibercriminales y lo utilizan para dar una apariencia legítima a dominios falsos, por ejemplo, http://www.exampled0main.com, donde la “o" ha sido reemplazada por el cero. En otros ejemplos, la “o" latina puede ser sustituida por una “o" cirílica, un carácter muy similar en el que la detección directa a simple vista es prácticamente imposible. Desde G Data SecurityLabs se espera que ya ha habido víctimas de este ataque homógrafo.

“Como normal general, debemos ser cautelosos con los mensajes procedentes de remitentes desconocidos, no hacer clic en los enlaces ni abrir archivos adjuntos pues podrían contener código malicioso", recomiendan desde G Data SecurityLabs. “De igual forma, debemos acceder a las direcciones web donde es necesario introducir un nombre de usuario y contraseña escribiéndolas de forma manual en el navegador o bien a través de los ‘favoritos’ almacenados en el navegador. Y, por supuesto, mantener actualizado un software antivirus que incluya firewall y filtro web".

Este tipo de configuración, ya disponible técnicamente, será aplicable a nivel global para toda una organización o bien a nivel de dominio.

Spamina ha incorporado una nueva funcionalidad a sus soluciones de protección del correo electrónico denominada “marcado de correo sospechoso" que modifica el tratamiento de los posibles spams permitiendo al usuario su aceptación o eliminación.

Con esta nueva herramienta, en lugar de enviar los correos electrónicos detectados como no deseados a una cuarentena accesible a través de un panel web o a través del informe de correo bloqueado, los correos también se pueden enviar directamente al usuario con una marca determinada en el asunto del mismo. Esta marca, por defecto “[SPAM]", es configurable por cada administrador e incluso se puede decidir su ubicación (antes o después) en el asunto original.

Este nuevo modo de funcionamiento proporciona transparencia a los usuarios al no enviar informes de correo bloqueado y al no guardar correos de ningún tipo (spam o válidos) en el sistema. Si el administrador decide usar las funcionalidades asociadas a la cuarentena del spam y copia de correo válido (recuperación de correos, reporte de falsos positivos o negativos), también puede, simultáneamente realizar el marcado de correo sospechoso y que sea el usuario final quien decida eliminarlo o no.

Según ha declarado Susana Duran, CTO de Spamina, “Nuestra finalidad es proporcionar tanto a los administradores como a los usuarios finales la máxima versatilidad en nuestras soluciones, de tal modo que en cada caso puedan decidir emplear las herramientas que se ajusten mejor a sus necesidades o políticas corporativas, proporcionándoles siempre una garantía en cuanto a la seguridad de su correo electrónico".

Privates es un juego cuya acción transcurre en el aparato reproductor femenino y alrededores. La misión del capitán Sterling y sus muchachos, protegidos únicamente por gorritos de látex, consiste en luchar contra bacterias y virus.

Tras un breve tutorial, Privates se transforma en un juego frenético, en el que la rapidez al escoger la munición lo es todo. El diseño de los niveles dificulta los movimientos, con lo que batallar contra las distintas enfermedades y parásitos sexuales es todo un reto.

Aunque la anatomía de Privates no sea muy fiel a la realidad, el juego cumple su papel educativo gracias a las fichas de los \"enemigos\". Los diálogos en inglés rebosan de dobles sentidos y chistes, amenizando situaciones que corren el riesgo de tratarse con excesiva seriedad.
